Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return overview

The Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return gives you the complete classic ascent — every teahouse, suspension bridge, and acclimatization day of the traditional route — and then removes the part most trekkers would happily skip: the three-day walk back down the same trail. After sunrise on Kala Patthar (5,545 m), the trip's high point, a helicopter lifts you from Gorak Shep and has you back in Kathmandu the same morning. The ascent itself is uncompromised. You fly to Lukla and walk the full trail through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche, with two dedicated acclimatization days built in — this is not a shortcut to altitude, but a properly paced climb that lets your body adapt the way it must. The reward comes twice: first at Everest Base Camp itself (5,364 m) beside the Khumbu Icefall, then at dawn on Kala Patthar with Everest's summit pyramid glowing gold above the Khumbu Glacier. The flight out is an experience in its own right. From Gorak Shep the helicopter sweeps past the Khumbu Icefall, circles beneath the fluted ridges of Ama Dablam, and follows the Dudh Koshi Valley you spent a week climbing — the whole route replayed in forty minutes from the air. At ten days door to door, this itinerary suits trekkers with limited holiday time who refuse to compromise on the full Base Camp experience.

Frequently asked questions

After sunrise on Kala Patthar we descend to Gorak Shep, where a shared helicopter (maximum 5 passengers) collects the group. Because the air at 5,164 m is thin, the aircraft flies light and makes a brief refuelling stop in Lukla before continuing to Kathmandu — total flying time is around 45 minutes to an hour. A combined passenger-plus-luggage weight limit of roughly 80–100 kg per person applies. If weather delays the flight, we wait at Gorak Shep or descend to a lower pickup point such as Pheriche or Lukla; we recommend keeping a buffer day in Kathmandu.
